divine appointments

they're all around you. just open your eyes and ask questions.

they found me in a commerce bank. somehow the work that was hung resonated with them, and they called. who knew the parallels in our lives would be so uncanny.

they simply needed some photographs for their new business cards, and letters. you see a couple of years ago he had a dream. in this dream he was aware that he needed to retire from his long standing career and start a new one, with his wife, in a completely foreign field. so now here they are ready to make this leap into the unknown as a real-estate team. he called me and still wasn't sure if they should come to me, but after we hung up they talked about it and decided something was just right and called back to make their appointment. i'm glad they did.

we talked about everything. from leaps of faith, marriage, children, business integrity, God and when it was all over we prayed together. that sort of connection is so rare but when it happens you wonder why you were really brought together. i'm excited for don and carol, for taking a risk and learning what living life to the full really means.

the lake house

we couldn't be more different. in terms of background, idealogy, and goals you might wonder why it works. but somehow when we all come together we share something so precious that would have been sad to miss.

i met these girls a few years ago when i moved onto the colgate team at vml. we were responsible for ensuring colgate-palmolive had the best interactive possible and our team worked like a machine. we all had different strengths, responsibilities, and shortcomings, but the best part of it was we genuinely cared about each other. how often is it that you find friends that you can't imagine your life without in the midst of a terribly stressful job? for us, it was magic. over the years we've stood by each other through tears in the bathroom, monumental (or so we thought) job goofs, marriages, bar exams, pregnancies, babies, a sick baby, a brain tumor, divorce, and one by one leaving that team to pursue other opportunities.

when i decided to leave that job my heart broke at the thought of losing these women that taught me so much, so i initiated a book club. we meet each month to discuss the hostess choice but mostly our lives. all the while enjoying good wine and the company at hand. we call on each other for career, family, financial, and just life advice.

this weekend was our time to spend more than a couple of hours together. we piled, literally, into clare's tahoe and made our way to arkansas. erin's wonderful parents hosted us, and while they call it a lake house i might call it a dream house. from the reclaimed wooden floors to the deck that overlooked the water this place in the middle of the woods couldn't have been a better location for us to recharge.

giggling like 10 year olds until 3 in the morning and deep conversation on the dock gave us that much more investment in each other. i had the best time and couldn't be more grateful for my "good for the soul friends" as jan says.

we missed morgan, rusti, brandi, and carly, but they'll come next time.

addison and her entourage

they say it takes a village to raise a child, but did you know it takes 3 aunts, a grandma, a grandpa, a mom, a dad, and an aunts boyfriend to take one year photos? for addison it's true. when they all kept climbing out of the minivan decked out in their royals gear i couldn't help but laugh. the more and more i learn about the pratts the more i understand, that's just how they roll, together.

addison came in from nashville with her parents to see her sweet daddy's family and i was beyond excited to photograph this little one. i've been hearing about her for a long time, and she lives up to all of it. my connection came from her aunt heidi.

heidi started assisting me when she was in high school and i have to admit she was the best assistant i've ever had. i never had to tell her what do to, she just did it. it only took a glance to know heidi saw the very same random thing that would be fodder of the car ride home, and we have some stories....

like the time i was pregnant and the mother of the groom had on a tad (or way) too much perfume causing me to run to the bathroom and throw up. or maybe the time the groomsmen thought it would be a good idea to pick up the bride only to drop her face first on the ground. or heidi's car exploding in the middle of an intersection, or eating way too many doughnuts, cheeseburgers, and snickers bars, or the way she would look at my camera screen and applaud my food shots, i miss that girl! this year she is spending her summer in kirksville and i have to say i miss our inside jokes.

because i love heidi the love for her family was automatic, and that goes for my new friends shelley, rj, and addison

perfectly fit

when i met jonathon and sherry for the first time it was at starbucks, per my recommendation. little did i know that was the most ridiculous choice for them, ever. here's the thing, unlike me, they seem to care about what they put in their bodies, and caffeine and large amounts of sugar are not allowed. ouch. but instead of scoffing i quickly realized, i wanted to be just like them, both. not just because they are super disciplined in being fit, but they were just plain nice.

from time to time i lose it at a wedding and theirs was one of them. i always wonder what i look like to other people as i stand in the corner and try to compose myself, hiding behind my lens, pushing the tears away so i don't miss the shot. it happened more than once at their wedding. the first was when jonothan asked his much younger brother if he was proud of him, it was as if his whole life was lived just so he could ask that question. the second was as they saw each other for the first time, watching jonathon's response to his bride. his reaction was so honest and beautiful. the most obscene amount of tears was as i photographed sherry dancing with the man that walked her down the aisle, the long time boyfriend of her mother. i was completely touched watching them dance and grateful to this stranger for loving my new friend.
