when culture finds it appropriate to send messages consisting of three letters and punctuation forming a smiley face it's hard to imagine a girl in the midst of her teenage years loving the written word. maybe it's a longing to push all the hard stuff onto a page rather than resonate in her heart.
i've never read her words, but i imagine that they have depth, because she does. we talked about God, family, and why on earth some people just can't catch a break. when i left the shoot i kept thinking how hard things have been for her, and how could that would be fair. but i think she recognizes what's good and clings to that because there is good, even when it's hard. had she never experienced all the things that hurt she would not have found the words.
